This exceptional debut takes place over a single night at a bar called The Final Final, the last bar on the edge of a small town in upstate New York. We know we are in for heartbreak, that is clear from the beginning, but what we don’t know is how much we will come to care about Emma and Lucas, their history and their present. Ordinary Hazards begins when Emma sits down at her local bar at 5 PM and introduces us to the other bar regulars, interweaving their backstories in a flawlessly told narrative. Emma is the only Final Final regular who is not from this town … Her upbringing ensured that she would have a first-class education and that she has been successful in her career. The puzzle of how she finds herself here, alone and unwilling to leave the bar, begins to unwind as the hours tick by. You will be mesmerized by her story and by Bruno’s writing which draws you in and never lets you go, even after you turn the last page. – Terry
