Smart Summer Reads takes place on one Sunday in July and one Sunday in August in the South Bay of Los Angeles. This is how it works:

  • Six authors are invited to meet you and discuss their latest book.
  • Our meet and greet with our authors and other readers begins at 3:00pm. The bookstore opens at 3:00pm too.
  • Then at 3:15pm the fun begins: Each author will be positioned at one of six stations around the venue.
  • Readers will be assigned a starting point and then move from station to station in 10 minute intervals, giving each author approximately 7 minutes to talk about their book and answer questions.
  • After the "formal" program there is ample opportunity for readers to talk more with each author and get their books signed.
  • The program wraps up around 5pm.

Published: Celadon Books - April 30th, 2019

A mesmerizing debut novel by Chip Cheek, Cape May explores the social and sexual mores of 1950s America through the eyes of a newly married couple from the genteel south corrupted by sophisticated New England urbanites.

Late September 1957. Henry and Effie, very young newlyweds from Georgia, arrive in Cape May, New Jersey, for their honeymoon only to find the town is deserted. Feeling shy of each other and isolated, they decide to cut the trip short. But before they leave, they meet a glamorous set of people who sweep them up into their drama. Clara, a beautiful socialite who feels her youth slipping away; Max, a wealthy playboy and Clara’s lover; and Alma, Max’s aloof and mysterious half-sister, to whom Henry is irresistibly drawn.

The empty beach town becomes their playground, and as they sneak into abandoned summer homes, go sailing, walk naked under the stars, make love, and drink a great deal of gin, Henry and Effie slip from innocence into betrayal, with irrevocable consequences.

Erotic and moving, this is a novel about marriage, love and sexuality, and the lifelong repercussions that meeting a group of debauched cosmopolitans has on a new marriage.

From the author of Best Day Ever, another gripping novel of psychological suspense set in an upscale Southern California community, for fans of B.A. Paris and Shari Lapena.

The perfect home. The perfect family. The perfect lie.

Jane Harris lives in a sparkling home in an oceanfront gated community in Orange County. It's a place that seems too beautiful to be touched by sadness. But exactly one year ago, Jane's oldest daughter, Mary, died in a tragic accident and Jane has been grief-stricken ever since. Lost in a haze of anti-depressants, she's barely even left the house. Now that's all about to change.

It's time for Jane to reclaim her life and her family. Jane's husband, David, has planned a memorial service for Mary and three days later, their youngest daughter, Betsy, graduates high school. Yet as Jane reemerges into the world, it's clear her family has changed without her. Her husband has been working long days--and nights--at the office. Her daughter seems distant, even secretive. And her beloved Mary was always such a good girl--dutiful and loving. But does someone know more about Mary, and about her last day, than they've revealed?

The bonds between mothers and daughters, and husbands and wives should never be broken. But you never know how far someone will go to keep a family together...

The Time Collector: A Novel Cover Image

Published: Picador - April 16th, 2019

A page-turner from beginning to end, The Time Collector is the latest magical thriller from the bestselling, PRISM Award-winning author Gwendolyn Womack. Roan West was born with an extraordinary gift: every time he touches an object, he experiences its past. He is a master psychometrist, someone who can relive memories across centuries and glean history first-hand. So far, he's spent his life as a voyeur, keeping largely to himself and using his ability to find and sell valuable antiques. But his quiet life in New Orleans is about to change. Stuart, a fellow pyschometrist and Roan's closest friend, has just unearthed several "ooparts": out-of-place-artifacts, including a ring that was discovered in bedrock as old as the dinosaurs but that once belonged to Rene Descartes. Stuart soon disappears--becoming one of several psychomestrists who have either died mysteriously or vanished. Ooparts call recorded history into question--and someone wants to silence the psychometrists or harness their gifts. When Roan comes across a YouTube video of an attractive young woman who has discovered a priceless pocket watch by "sensing" it, he knows he has to warn her. But will Melicent Tilpin listen? And can Roan convince her to help him find Stuart before it's too late?
